We got the opportunity to interview Brymo the latest R&B sensation in Nigeria courtesy of Chocolate City Records which boasts other music giants like M.I., Ice Prince and Jesse Jagz. He has scored hit songs with each artist such as Ice Prince’s “Oleku”, which was one of the biggest songs of 2010 and recently released his own hit single “ARA”. His unique talent has yet to be fully explored so we just can’t wait to see what he has stored up. Here is Brymo -
1) Brymo, you stepped into one of the hottest labels in Nigeria, what does that feel like?
I still think about It everyday. How my life was transformed from nothing to something. The feeling I can’t describe, but its definitely a good one.
2) What is your background as far as music? How long have you been in the industry?
I started my journey professionally in 2006. In 2008 I shot d video to d hit single (shawdy) off my 1st album ” brymstone” then I took a break. It was rili hard for me n my sponsors back then to put a management team 2gether, competition was stiff n it was very hard to break into d scene. Then the phone call from denrele came n I met m.i n audu. Then I met paul n hence a new page .
3) What was your main challenge after being signed to Chocolate City records?
I believe half of my problems vanished. Cos I didn’t have to bother about how to do a lot of things anymore especially management. Plus now I have d support of 3 rili talented label mates, what more can I ask for? But yes there was a challenge. The pressure of being signed to such a label. Cos I had to work. I wouldn’t put my money on something that won’t sell, so I expected the label to think that way too. So I had to kill every song i was on….lol, perform to my best ability every time I get d opportunity.
4) How does Chocolate City manage all it’s artists to make sure each gets their own time to shine? It seems they do a good job of timing releases.
A very good job. Meetings r constantly held to make sure every1 is making progress, n who is ready for what. So as soon as an artiste is due for a release, d team comes 2gether n make it happen.
5) GbeduNation has been promoting Chocolate City all over the world as other sites do, what kind of responses do you get from fans in the UK, US etc?
We get massive love from around d world. We get feedbacks from ppl in d uk n d states, our songs r being played on radio or in d clubs. I believe it’ll get bigger with time n Nigerian music generally.
6) Where else have you performed?
I performed @ d O2 in d uk in april last year. D silverbird anniversary last year. Been to malaysia with ice prince. Kenya. Big brother in south africa. D 233 connect show in ghana alongside fabulous. Star mega jam abuja. E.T.C
7) What is the worst part of being a successful artist? And best?
The worst part is loosing touch with ppl u’ve known for a long time. U have to be away from ur family too sometimes. But after a while tho, that can be fixed. The best part for me is d traveling. By d time am 40, I most probably would have been to half d countries In d world 3 Times over…lol.
8) You have a unique sound especially in your hit single “Ara”, what influences your creativity?
Jeese jagz told me once to just open my mouth n sing it out. D only difference between my 1st effort n now is that u can hear d soul more. So I just let it out. N as long as there r great artiste in d world, I’ll always come up with great stuff. Good music inspires me
9) When can we expect an album from Brymo? Do you have another single on the way?
D album in my calendar will be out in 2012. N yh I’m working on other songs. another single might come from there.
10) Do you have any set plans to tour in the near future? Where?
I’m looking to tour d country 1st, then I can expand into d rest of africa n subsequently europe n then america… Don’t ask how many yrs this will take.. Lol.
